The Porsche 550A Spyder #48 was raced in the 1958 Buenos Aires 1000km entered by the driver quartet featuring Stirling Moss, Jean Behra, Huschke von Hanstein and Edgar Barth. Only Stirling Moss and Jean Behra ultimately drove the car to success. The small engined racer managed to come up from 14th on the grid to a more sumptuous 3rd overall, beaten only by the more powerful Ferrari 250 TR58 duo.

The car finished first in its class, Sports 2000, just 7 minutes behind the overall leader and a formidable 19 minutes in front of the next Sports 2000 participant. The 1:18 version of this beautiful car is done by Maisto and is sold as a budget model. I have to thank my girlfriend for giving me this as a present (LOVE YOU!).

At first glance, the model looks very nice and spot on. The paint is smooth in most areas, but it does have imperfections here and there. Nothing too big though. Everything is a tampo except the front Porsche badge on the hood. The shut lines are ok, except for the engine cover one, its way too large and visible.

The front of the model is pretty neat and accurate. The chrome parts are very nice and the grill underneath is well replicated. The lights arent so good though. The lense and mount are very well made, but the attachment stubs on both headlights AND fog lights are very visible. The rear end has again beautiful grills which are very well made. Unfortunately, yet again, the lense and mount are right, but the attachment stubs is very visible. Even worse, the nicely done exhaust is not excavated at all, not even painted black. A little spot of black paint should do marvels here.

The model has opening doors, hood and rear engine cover. None of them are flimsy and they all hold their position upright. The hinges on the hood and rear engine cover are well hidden and realistic; however, the doors are supported by quite large dog legs.

The hood opens very smoothly and STAYS open. There are quite some nice details here. Even though of the space is filled with the fuel tank. Wires, even though just painted one, look realistic and the filler cap is very well made aswell. The battery says Bosch and looks very much modern too my surprise.

The engine cover opens backwards and again, stays open. The engine is very small and nicely done. Maybe the chrome is a bit too shiny and could be a bit duller. It does lack some wiring aswell but on the whole, its a good engine. However, the rear compartment also hides a spare tyre and a tool set (I think). All are very well made and held down by very realistic rubber straps.

The cockpit is well detailed and defined. The gauges are a decals but they look allright for a budget model. The steering wheel is very nice and most buttons are 3D and realistic. The seats do a good job aswell in replicating leather. To my dissatisfaction though, those aweful and large doglegs are very visible and take almost half of the cockpit itself!

The wheels rubber is a bit toyish as is the rim. Could have been better IMO. They are not branded neither. Also, the rim style, as with most of these old Porsches, is completely sealed and hides the detail behind. Maisto used this to their advantage and did not produce a brake/disk caliper. Expected from a budget model actually. On the other hand, there is a fully workable suspension on each of the wheels. Great!

The undercarriage again reminds that this model is a budget one, very little detail but at least it shows some more of the exhaust system. The small rivets do make it look more realistic though.

In conclusion, I love this model. Maisto did a great job on these Porsches and how I wish they would make some more. A highly recommended piece, especially if you are into vintage race cars.
